Scientists should be able to concentrate on the best ways to make use of data generated by research activities. To ensure the effective development of global research data infrastructures, GRDI2020 is bringing together selcted experts to address the important issues facing data infrastructures on a global level on 23-24 October 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. Co-hosted by GRDI2020 and GRL2020,  this two-day workshop offers a platform to explore how  data infrastructures need to evolve and what concrete steps are needed. The Workshop features visions for next-generation global data infrastructures, the Africa landscape, technological and policy aspects. Parallel sessions focus on topics spanning data security, data provenance and trust, data interoperability, data curation and preservation, data storage and management, data modelling, data discovery, data analysis and use, virtual research environments, data policy, funding, sustainability, and governance of research infrastructures.

Knowledge exchange is underpinned by a set of position papers from the experts in attendance, sharing their visions with peers from other disciplines and countries, serving as a starting point to help formulate concrete steps moving forward. The position papers will serve as a spring board during the parallel brainstorming sessions. Outputs will be shared through the GRDI2020 Web Channel.

Date & Venue: GRDI2020 and GRL2020 Africa are co-located with CODATA22, 23-24 October, 2010 - SPIER, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa
