The talk sheds light on the assets and capabilities of Europe's six Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs) and their potential to underpin value-add cloud and grid services for eScience, public administration and enterprise through the adoption of standards. The Digital Agenda for Europe sets out a clear drive towards interoperability across the Information Technology landscape based on an open vision. This move entails assessing guidelines on making the best use of standards in public procurement to improve efficiency and reduce the risk of dependency on a single provider, so-called vendor lock-in.
Re-using public data plays a large role in ensuring pay-off with benefits for all European citizens - society at large, the economy and for science so that the results of publicly funded research is spread as widely as possible. By evaluating the current and emerging assets and capabilities of Europe's DCIs and the implementation, current and planned, of existing standards for clouds and grids, SIENA is playing a central role in ensuring the roles and offerings of DCIs, helping to chart a course for the long-term availability of committed assets.
SIENA is delivering a European Roadmap on Grid and Cloud Standards for eScience & beyond to create a common vision for the future evolution of European Research, and to promote the creation of an integrated standards-based, interoperable European eInfrastructure.
