The 5G Technology platform is an initiative to bring together the key players in 5G development to develop a robust and aligned 5G Ecosystem in Europe and beyond. The event took place in phygital (combined physical and digital) form – with speakers and VIP guests in Riga, Latvia, and streamed online to thousands of viewers worldwide. Aside from the already-mentioned VASES, one main sponsor is ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the main Telecommunication Standardization Bureau responsible for defining the main 5G Telco standards. Key topics at this 2023 edition event included 6G and sustainability, XR and Metaverse, and Telco for national security, with NATO representatives and several Ukrainian and Latvian government authorities running closed meetings about strategic communications in war times. SNS JU’s new executive director, Erzsébet Fitori, was also present alongside 6G-IA chairman Colin Wilcock at the event.

This year, the CSA ambassador project SNS ICE (Smart Networks and Services International And European Cooperation Ecosystem) organised three co-creation events:

  1. promoting synergies between SNS ICE and national 6G initiatives;
  2. 6G and sustainability (together with the Hexa-X II project, the EU flagship initiative for 6G);
  3. 6G for verticals.

These featured various panel sessions and included drafting reports that should constitute the first step for the SNS ICE consortium to develop a couple of policy briefs destined to enhance collaborations between policymakers and telco providers. Also, event organisers and attendees were interviewed, and their impressions will be published in a video series.

Our role

Trust-IT is involved in three CSA initiatives linked to the final stages of 5G development and 6G transition (6GStart) as well as new 6G development horizons (SNS ICE and SNS OPS) aiming to build a collaborative environment for the 6G Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking, the next public-private partnership spurring the development of 6G. Its role involves monitoring and analysing the technological KPIs and societal KVIs that SNS phase 1 projects will achieve, creating a framework for the 6G-IA Tests, Measurement and Validation Working Group (TMV WG). Second, outlining a pre-standardisation roadmap for SNS JU RIA projects will culminate in a standards tracker based on the work with 5G PPP and 6GStart. Third, engaging relevant through a Vertical Engagement Tracker online platform will collect use cases and new verticals and translate them into requirements for SNS research activities and standardisation inputs. Fourth, contributing to gap analyses through whitepapers and policy briefs and drafting an exploitation plan mapping SNS ICE KERs.
