IBM is the largest private R&D enterprise in the world and invests each year about 6 billion dollars in research, focusing on high value opportunities for the company. In 2011, IBM once again received the largest number of registered patents in the United States, being the 19th consecutive year that IBM leads the U.S. national ranking. The successful history of IBM in research and innovation has also brought a high international recognition. In addition to six Nobel prizes, IBM researchers have been recognized with seven U.S. National Medals of Technology, five U.S. National Medals of Science and 21 memberships in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The R&D area in IBM is comprised of more than 59 members of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. The company has six Turing Awards, including the 2010 award, which was delivered to Frances Allen, becoming the first woman in history to receive a Turing Award. IBM Research aims to stimulate innovation in key areas of information technology and make these innovations quickly available in the market, while maintaining the growth of IBM, creating new business for the future of the company and applying innovations to the success of its clients. IBM Research Brazil was established in June 2010, as the first IBM Research lab in South America, with locations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The research conducted at the Brazilian lab focuses on: natural resource discovery, exploration and integrated operations in the areas of oil, gas and mining, and addressing the sustainability and safety of the resources industry; social media analytics; industrial cloud technologies; and nanotechnology. IBM Research Brazil is part of IBM’s twelve global research labs, with about 3000 researchers worldwide and with deep expertise across a wide spectrum of technologies. Currently the Brazilian lab counts with dozens of scientists and software engineers leading worldwide teams in selected areas, and collaborating closely with colleagues across the world to create new transformative technologies and advances for the region and beyond IBM Research Brazil, on one hand, contributes to the coordination of the innovation activities focusing as well on the identification of business models. On the technical activities, IBM Research Brazil has a strong experience on the analysis of massive data, especially in the context of Smarter Cities, and contributes data analysis tools and techniques.
