Brief description

AppliFish is the iMarine mobile app that combines species fact sheets with information from five major data providers: FAO Species Fact-sheets, OBIS and WoRMS common names, AquaMaps, FishBase / SeaLifeBase, and FAO Capture Statistics. These fact-sheets can be used to learn more about a species and its distribution, common names, maps and images. They can also be used by consumers to better understand the status of a species and make a conscious choice when choosing fish. The application was developed within the iMarine project and contains the 550 most important species for marine fisheries, aquaculture, and / or iconic marine species with a high need for conservation. Over 8,400 downloads are reported in October 2014.

Our role

Trust-IT was in charge of the development of the mobile application together with the design of the graphics identity. AppliFish was originally written for Android only https://play.google.com/store/search?q=applifish, but later added also iOS https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/applifish/id593857305?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2 to meet the large interest and enlarge the user base.

AppliFish is built from five major data components: FAO Species Fact-sheets, OBIS and WoRMS common names, AquaMaps, FishBase / SeaLifeBase, and FAO Capture Statistics. This data is combined in an input process for acquiring data, and brought together in a database which is then incorporated in the mobile application framework. Once the data has been collected and stored, it is incorporated in an iOS or Android mobile application, which combines the data into the factsheets; organized by provider, information section, and links to source system.
